Digi­tal Plat­forms for Inclu­sive Access to Education

Do digi­tal plat­forms help pro­mote inclu­sive access to education?

Access to early child­hood edu­ca­tion remains unevenly dis­tri­bu­ted in Ger­many. Mar­gi­na­li­zed child­ren in particular—such as child­ren with a migrant back­ground or child­ren with disabilities—often face struc­tu­ral bar­riers to acces­sing child care. Some fede­ral sta­tes are incre­asingly rely­ing on digi­tal plat­forms to orga­nize regis­tra­tion and pla­ce­ment pro­ces­ses and make them more trans­pa­rent. But do these digi­tal solu­ti­ons actually con­tri­bute to grea­ter equity? Or do they repro­duce exis­ting ine­qua­li­ties in a new form? 

Zukunft D and the GeDAB net­work cor­di­ally invite you to join us on June 2 to dis­cuss the fol­lo­wing questions: 

• How fair are digi­tal access procedures?
• What con­di­ti­ons are neces­sary for truly inclu­sive access to education?
• What role can digi­tal policy tools usefully play in this context—and what are their limitations?

We are very plea­sed that we were able to secure Sabine Hilger’s con­tri­bu­tion on “Day­care Spot Requests.”

Ms. Hil­ger is the direc­tor of the Office for Early Child­hood Edu­ca­tion, Care, and Sup­port in the City of Rosen­heim. She will pro­vide us with insight into the imple­men­ta­tion of the digi­tal regis­tra­tion pro­cess for the AKDB’s day­care spot pilot program.

We are very plea­sed to have Viola Laux join us to share her insights on “Day­care Database—Opportunities and Chal­lenges in the Digi­ta­liza­tion of Early Child­hood Edu­ca­tion and Care.”

Ms. Laux is the divi­sion direc­tor and deputy depart­ment head for early child­hood edu­ca­tion and care at the Minis­try of Social Affairs of Schles­wig-Hol­stein. After com­ple­ting her stu­dies in edu­ca­tio­nal sci­ence, she worked as a rese­arch ana­lyst at the Ger­man Youth Insti­tute (DJI). She later worked at the Minis­try of Social Affairs in Ham­burg, first as an ana­lyst, then as deputy head of divi­sion, and finally as head of divi­sion. Her respon­si­bi­li­ties include, among other things, the areas of edu­ca­tio­nal assis­tance, child pro­tec­tion, unac­com­pa­nied minor refu­gees, and cross-sec­to­ral coope­ra­tion (inclu­ding schools, men­tal health ser­vices, the police, and the judiciary).

About Our Initiatives

Zukunft D is a new initia­tive aimed at streng­thening demo­cracy in a digi­ta­li­zed, inter­con­nec­ted society, sup­ported by Algo­rith­m­Watch, aula, Liquid Demo­cracy, the Schwarz­kopf Foun­da­tion for Young Europe, and Wiki­me­dia Ger­many. It is a col­la­bo­ra­tive net­work within the fede­ral pro­gram “Demo­kra­tie leben!” (“Live Demo­cracy!”) of the Fede­ral Minis­try of Edu­ca­tion, Family Affairs, Senior Citi­zens, Women, and Youth, under the pro­gram area “Deve­lo­p­ment of a Cen­tral Fede­ral Infrastructure.” 

The GeDAB net­work brings tog­e­ther stake­hol­ders in early child­hood edu­ca­tion from the fields of poli­tics, aca­de­mia, prac­tice, admi­nis­tra­tion, and civil society to streng­then demo­cracy edu­ca­tion by com­ba­ting dis­cri­mi­na­tion in early child­hood education.
