An Explo\u00adra\u00adtory Qua\u00adli\u00adta\u00adtive Pilot Study on Addres\u00adsing Insti\u00adtu\u00adtio\u00adnal Racism in Ber\u00adlin Day\u00adcare Centers<\/p>\n\n

Child\u00adcare cen\u00adters are not spaces free of dis\u00adcri\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion: Fami\u00adlies are repea\u00adtedly con\u00adfron\u00adted with ever\u00ady\u00adday racism there. This qua\u00adli\u00adta\u00adtive pilot study uses semis\u00adtruc\u00adtu\u00adred inter\u00adviews with par\u00adents and experts in Ber\u00adlin to examine the expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adces fami\u00adlies have and how they and the day\u00adcare cen\u00adters deal with inci\u00addents of racism. The fin\u00addings: Fami\u00adlies expe\u00adri\u00adence racism in day\u00adcare cen\u00adters through dis\u00adcri\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtory assump\u00adti\u00adons, mate\u00adri\u00adals, and rou\u00adti\u00adnes. Par\u00adents and day\u00adcare cen\u00adters deal with expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adces of racism in dif\u00adfe\u00adrent ways. Some par\u00adents bring up the issue of racism. In this way, they enable the day\u00adcare cen\u00adter to reeva\u00adluate its own struc\u00adtures and pro\u00adces\u00adses and res\u00adhape them with an anti-racist per\u00adspec\u00adtive. Howe\u00adver, par\u00adents also report that some day\u00adcare cen\u00adters down\u00adplay racism, refu\u00adsing to address the issue and ther\u00adeby rejec\u00adting oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties to imple\u00adment anti-racist prac\u00adti\u00adces. This sta\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adzes the initial state. The fin\u00addings sup\u00adport exis\u00adting rese\u00adarch and align with demands from civil society, inclu\u00adding those for orga\u00adniza\u00adtio\u00adnal deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment that addres\u00adses racism, trai\u00adning cur\u00adri\u00adcula for edu\u00adca\u00adtors that address dis\u00adcri\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion and pro\u00admote diver\u00adsity, and an insti\u00adtu\u00adtio\u00adna\u00adli\u00adzed com\u00adplaint manage\u00adment sys\u00adtem. In addi\u00adtion, the pilot study high\u00adlights the signi\u00adfi\u00adcant need for rese\u00adarch on racism in early child\u00adhood edu\u00adca\u00adtion in Germany.<\/p>\n\n
