Pre\u00adsent for Equi\u00adta\u00adble Access to Early Child\u00adhood Edu\u00adca\u00adtion?\u201d We deli\u00adbera\u00adtely invi\u00adted experts with hands-on expe\u00adri\u00adence who them\u00adsel\u00adves have ties to the immi\u00adgrant com\u00admu\u00adnity. All too often, peo\u00adple talk about them ins\u00adtead of with them, yet they are the ones who, dra\u00adwing on their own expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adces and daily prac\u00adtice, can best pro\u00advide insights which eit\u00adher enables or hin\u00adders equi\u00adta\u00adble access to early child\u00adhood education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Access to early child\u00adhood edu\u00adca\u00adtion in Ger\u00admany remains struc\u00adtu\u00adrally une\u00adqual. Various bar\u00adriers pre\u00advent all child\u00adren from secu\u00adring a spot in day\u00adcare. At the same time, the cur\u00adrent decline in birth rates is chan\u00adging the land\u00adscape: where day\u00adcare spots were pre\u00adviously in short sup\u00adply, new oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties are emer\u00adging. Against this back\u00addrop, we addres\u00adsed the ques\u00adtion: Does this change actually lead to grea\u00adter equa\u00adlity of oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity, or are exis\u00adting sel\u00adec\u00adtion mecha\u00adnisms merely shifting?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Access beg\u00adins with&nbsp;trust<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion, \u201cAccess Through Trust\u2014Intercultural Open\u00adness in Early Child\u00adhood Edu\u00adca\u00adtion,\u201d P\u0131nar \u00c7etik from the Ger\u00adman Islam Aca\u00addemy gave us insight into how clo\u00adsely access and trust are linked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion, it became clear that even small details can deter\u00admine whe\u00adther fami\u00adlies feel wel\u00adcome: whe\u00adther a name is pro\u00adno\u00adun\u00adced cor\u00adrectly, whe\u00adther wel\u00adcome infor\u00adma\u00adtion is dis\u00adplayed in mul\u00adti\u00adple lan\u00adguages, or whe\u00adther a team is diverse. Cen\u00adtral to this was the motto \u201cAtti\u00adtude, not back\u00adground.\u201d This requi\u00adres inter\u00adcul\u00adtu\u00adral com\u00adpe\u00adten\u00adcies and anti-bias approa\u00adches based on the \u201cAnti-Bias Edu\u00adca\u00adtion and Upbrin\u00adging\u201d model deve\u00adlo\u00adped by Kin\u00adder\u00adwel\u00adten. Respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adlity for this must not rest solely on indi\u00advi\u00addual team mem\u00adbers. It needs to be struc\u00adtu\u00adrally embedded in poli\u00adcies, trai\u00adning, and the day-to-day ope\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons of the day\u00adcare center.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Struc\u00adtures matter\u2014not just good intentions<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These fin\u00addings were con\u00adfirmed and expan\u00added upon by Iman Rei\u00admann, direc\u00adtor of the Regen\u00adbo\u00adgen\u00adkids day\u00adcare cen\u00adter, who drew on more than 20 years of prac\u00adti\u00adcal experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion, it became clear just how much exter\u00adnal struc\u00adtures deter\u00admine whe\u00adther a genuine part\u00adner\u00adship with fami\u00adlies in edu\u00adca\u00adtion and child-rea\u00adring is even pos\u00adsi\u00adble in ever\u00ady\u00adday life. One chall\u00adenge she par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlarly high\u00adligh\u00adted con\u00adcerns wide\u00adspread assump\u00adti\u00adons about par\u00adents: If a parent is hastily labe\u00adled as \u201chard to reach\u201d or \u201cunin\u00adte\u00adres\u00adted,\u201d the ques\u00adtion of whe\u00adther the actual obs\u00adta\u00adcle might ins\u00adtead be the way the parent is approa\u00adched, whe\u00adther the timing of a parent-tea\u00adcher con\u00adfe\u00adrence or the lack of a trans\u00adla\u00adtion is the real obs\u00adta\u00adcle. It is important to shift the per\u00adspec\u00adtive: Ins\u00adtead of asking what steps fami\u00adlies must take, the focus should be on what con\u00addi\u00adti\u00adons are neces\u00adsary for an effec\u00adtive part\u00adner\u00adship and how edu\u00adca\u00adtio\u00adnal pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnals can ensure these con\u00addi\u00adti\u00adons are met. To do this, insti\u00adtu\u00adti\u00adons need time, per\u00adson\u00adnel, and appro\u00adpriate pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnal development.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What True Par\u00adti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adtion Requires<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key fin\u00adding of the expert dis\u00adcus\u00adsion was the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfore that demo\u00adgra\u00adphic change does not auto\u00adma\u00adti\u00adcally lead to grea\u00adter equa\u00adlity of oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity. While the decli\u00adning birth rate means there are more available day\u00adcare spots, this does not auto\u00adma\u00adti\u00adcally result in more child\u00adren atten\u00adding day\u00adcare. Struc\u00adtu\u00adral chan\u00adges are nee\u00added to take advan\u00adtage of the oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties this shift offers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This includes smal\u00adler group sizes, so that the needs and con\u00adcerns of indi\u00advi\u00addual child\u00adren can be addres\u00adsed more effec\u00adtively, as well as time and infor\u00adma\u00adtio\u00adnal resour\u00adces for early child\u00adhood edu\u00adca\u00adtors. Equally important are diverse teams that reflect the diver\u00adsity of fami\u00adlies, and easy access to lan\u00adguage inter\u00adpre\u00adters, so that com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion does not depend on indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adals having to impro\u00advise. Fami\u00adlies also need low-bar\u00adrier com\u00adplaint pro\u00adce\u00addu\u00adres that are embedded in a genuine cul\u00adture of feed\u00adback, where feed\u00adback is wel\u00adco\u00admed and leads to change. Last but not least, it is important to streng\u00adthen trust in com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties that, just a few years ago, were met with clo\u00adsed doors. This trust does not arise on its own: govern\u00adment agen\u00adcies, orga\u00adniza\u00adti\u00adons, and insti\u00adtu\u00adti\u00adons must actively build&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We would like to express our sin\u00adcere thanks for the insightful con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adons and the sti\u00admu\u00adla\u00adting dis\u00adcus\u00adsion.
